I enjoyed a couple of hours instruction on the beach behind Extreme Zone on Tuesday evening.Id popped in to the shop to seek advice regarding buying a buggy or a landboard.
Maggies advice was to take a buggy lesson and see how I got on.
The plan was to spend an hour with the instructor (Sean) flying a kite to make sure I was able to handle it then to spend a couple of hours learning to use the buggy.
When I turned up on Tuesday I was little nervous as the wind was quite brisk and I hadnt flown my kite (a Buster II, 2m) in anything as strong as that before.
Sean was calm and explained the basic safety points before launching a 1.5m kite to check I wasnt going to kill myself and had a basic understanding of how to control the kite. He covered everything including how to hold the handles, what to do in an emergency and also how to pack / unpack the kite.
I was feeling quite cocky when we moved on to a 2m canopy kite and Sean demonstrated a 10 feet skid as he launched the kite.
After a while of practising moving the kite through the wind window in a fixed pattern we moved on to the buggy.
All Ill say is it was fantastic and I left having purchased one.
Unfortunately I was unable to do the full lesson justice as my arms and upper back were struggling with the wind and Ill need to build up my fitness.
Sean was very patient and his explanations and guidance meant I was managing to skelp along the beach in no time at all.
It wasnt all plain sailing and a few lapses of concentration meant at best a new pair of boxers and worst a stiff shoulder the next day.
I built the buggy last night and cant wait for the weekend - hope its windy.
Thank you Extreme Zone, to Maggie, Sean and James and Fexifoil for the buggy
See you all in Casualty, Graham.
Conclusion : More than your moneys worth and a lot of fun.
